New York Fashion Week Recap

February may be the shortest month of the year, but from a fashion aficionado’s point of view, it is perhaps one of the most exciting! New York Fashion Week is always an amazing time to soak in the new designs from the best designers in the world, and this year’s lineup was no exception.

Alexander Wang’s eponymous line is synonymous with new-age grunge and cutting edge fashion that never takes itself too seriously. Wang has quite the reputation for his infamous parties after his shows, but this year he decided to mix things up. He debuted the all black, party-girl line in the midst of what seemed like a party itself! His laid-back collection consisted of body suits, leather pants, and band tees. Without compromising on perfect tailoring, Wang also gave his suiting a casual and cool look by pairing the body of a suit jacket with sweatshirt sleeves. Amidst flashing lights, hip-hop blasting and great beer served upon entry, Wang delivered his signature cool designs at the ultimate party.

We couldn't cover NYFW without discussing the highly anticipated relaunch of Calvin Klein! Raf Simons, blew the roof off the company's 39th street headquarters, where the show took place. Most were expecting Simons to take a minimalist approach (much like he did for Christian Dior), but instead he surprised everyone by taking the brand back to its roots with its clean yet sensual all-American style. Putting his own twist on the collection, it was full of colorful suiting, sheer varsity sweaters, sultry cut-outs, and steel toed boots. As an added bonus, Simons revived Calvin Klein’s signature denim in such a way that even famed ambassador, Brooke Shields, would be proud to say, “nothing comes between me and my Calvins!"

Closing out NYFW was the Marc Jacobs show. Pulling inspiration from the documentary Hip-Hop Evolution, Jacobs channeled his inner hip-hop lover and created a street style collection for the ages. Everything was oversized from the hats to the coats, and even the platform shoes! The documentary chronicles the rise of hip hop in New York from the 70’s to the 90’s, so Jacobs incorporated 70’s glam with flared pants, funky patterns, and shearling and fur coats. He brought the 90’s back with big sunglasses, track suits, and of course he topped it off with some seriously show stopping bling! Hip-hop had a huge impact on New York (and later, the world) and Jacobs did a great job of conveying its influence.
